Bali Island is still very much a shining "jewel of the east." But for all it's charm and mystique, the destructive effects of decades of booming tourism do not escape one's attention. My advice is to make your way to the heart and soul of this tropical dreamland - head for the high ground.

A friend of mine from Tokyo told me of Ubud, a magical place high in the hills of Bali where artists have gathered for years. Ubud is a rich yet relaxed garden theatre where Balinese art, music, and tradition come to life.

The following are a few memorable photographs from my last visit. If you wish to see a larger image and accompanying text just click on the photo.
